Tyler Hilton is a young American singer-songwriter whose vocal and music style have alternately been compared to Elton John and to Hilton's contemporary, Howie Day. Hilton has also ventured into television and movie acting, most notably with the television series One Tree Hill and in the Academy award-winning movie Walk the Line.
Hilton was born Nov. 22, 1983 in Palm Springs, CA. Raised in a family environment of performers and music of all kinds, Hilton has been quoted as saying, "I can't remember a time when there wasn't some sort of music in the house." The young prodigy was also self-taught on guitar and piano and began writing songs by the age of 13. He is said to have been influenced by a variety of genres including the music of Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Frank Sinatra and blues great Robert Johnson.
After a few family moves, the Hiltons settled in Coachella Valley, CA, where young Tyler attended La Quinta High School. Hilton dabbled for a while in a high school band, then took off on his own in night clubs and coffee houses in and around Palm Springs, initially on unpaid "open mic" (microphone) nights.
Then, at age 16, Hilton heard of a local radio contest to win tickets to a Johnny Lang blues concert. Hilton called into the station and sang his own on-the-spot version of Lang's "Breakin' Me." He was awarded not only the tickets but a spot on the KLOS Los Angeles radio station's Christmas concert. The performance was heard by Maverick Records, which immediately set up a contract for the upcoming star. Recording with Maverick, Hilton's first album, The Tracks of Tyler Hilton, was released in 2004; he was only 19 years old.
After this initial success, Tyler performed as the opening act for The Wreckers, The Neville Brothers, Goo Goo Dolls, Blues Traveler and other well-known musical groups and soloists. He also began performing on his own professionally. It was at this time that Tyler took his first shot at acting, beginning with a part in television series One Tree Hill, as character Chris Keller, a music store owner who entertains a would-be romantic involvement with Haley, the daughter of Jimmy and Lydia James.
In 2005, Hilton accepted an offer that would earn him recognition in the cinematic world: the role of young Elvis Presley in the Academy Award-winning Johnny Cash bio movie Walk the Line. Hilton performed the Elvis Presley songs "Milk Cow Blues" and "That's All Right"for the film. Hilton also had a role in the movie Charlie Bartlett, released in February 2008, and has appeared in music videos.
In addition to his self-titled album, Hilton is credited on a number of musical compilations, including Walk the Line and three different One Tree Hill soundtrack albums. Hilton has an official website, several fan sites, a Myspace page for fans and profiles on MTV, Billboard magazine and Rolling Stone magazine. He also allows tapings of his live performances, which are shown on archive.org.
